2.01 DESIGN

A. Earth Rods

The earth rods shall be copper clad steel core rods of 16mm diameter and 1800mm in length. The copper cladding shall be 99.9 per cent pure electrolytic copper and the coating thickness shall be a minimum of 0.25mm. The copper shall be molecularly bonded to the steel. The steel shall be a low carbon steel, grade 43A of BS EN 10137 pt (1 to 3) or equivalent. The steel shall be suitable for driving with a power hammer. The threads shall be rolled on to the rods.

B. Earth Rod Couplings

These shall be of aluminium bronze, counter bored to enclose fully the threads on the rods. The design shall ensure that, when assembled, there shall be direct rod to rod contact when the rod driving force is applied.

C. Earth Rod Driving Head

The driving head shall be of high strength steel, threaded to fit the Earth Rod Couplings. The design shall ensure that there is direct driving head to rod contact when the rod driving force is applied. The driving head shall be suitable for reuse.

D. Earthing Conductor

The following Types of earthing conductors shall be used:

Bare hard drawn stranded copper wire, conductors in the following sizes:

35, 70, and 185mm²

1000V insulated, stranded softdrawn copper wire in the following sizes:

150mm² and 50mm².

E. Clamps and Connectors

A full range of clamps and connectors will be required with the earthing material. All clamps and connectors shall be constructed in high strength copper alloy bodies and screws. They shall be suitable for use with the earthing conductor sizes and with the earth rods. The Supplier shall provide a catalogue showing the full range of clamps and connectors on offer together with dimensions in each case.

F. Exothermic Welding

Exothermic welding connection kits may also be used for connecting the earthing material. The kits shall consist of:

(a) Graphite moulds for right angle, tee and straight through connections

(b) Handle clamp for the moulds

(c) Welding metal powder

(d) Starting flint gun

(e) Mould Scraper

(f) Mould cleaning brush
