SVC & SVG Problem Solving

1.Electric Arc Furnace

Electric Arc Furnace is regarded as a nonlinear and erratic load, it will create a series of adverse effects to the
power grid, mainly including:

Serious three-phase unbalance of the power grid, negative sequence current.
High order harmonics, such as 24th even harmonics and 3rd, 5th, 7th odd harmonic, severe voltage distortion
becomes more complicated.
Serious voltage flicker. 
Low power factor

One of the methods to completely resolve above problems is to install a dynamic static reactive power
compensation device (SVC) with quick response speed, the response time of SVC system  is less than lOms.
The strict technical requirements is met, reactive current to electric arc furnace is provided, voltage level of bus
is stabilized, the output of the metallurgical active power is increased, and minimize the impact of flicker. The
isolated phase compensation function of SVC can eliminate the three-phase unbalance caused by electric arc
furnace, filtering devices, the harmful high order harmonics and improved power quality and power factor are
achieved through providing capacitive reactive power to the system.

2.Rolling Mill

The reactive power impulse caused by rolling mill and other industrial symmetry loads during working will
generate the following effects to the power grid:

Severe voltage level drop and voltage fluctuation make the electrical equipment inoperative, and reduce the
production efficiency.
Reduction of the power factor
Harmful high order harmonics in transmission device of load, mainly including odd harmonics, such as 5th, 7th,
11th, 13th and side frequency, which will lead to serious distortion of voltage level.

SVC can perfectly solve the aboved problems. A stable bus voltage is maintained, the harmonics is eliminated,
and the power factor is close to 1.

 3.Power supply of electric locomotive

the three-phase balance of the power grid is got through the quick isolated phase compensation function of
SVC, and the improved power factor is achieved through filters. SVC has solved the problems perfectly not only
technically but also economically with its excellent cost performance.

Thyristor Controlled Reactors
1.I
n inductive circuits the current is lagging,i.e. the reactor consumes reactive power. 
2.
Since the reactor does not allow current rushes it is possible to control it with thyristorvalves at a firing angle between 90 –
   180 degrees.
3.
A “chopping” of the current sinewave produces harmonics, however the 3rd harmonic and multiples of the 3rd harmonic can
   be trapped within the reactor by means of Delta connection.

Harmonic Filters
&#x1;Will add capacitive power!
&#x1;Harmonics are generated by unsymetrical loads of the current, typical producers of harmonics are the TCR and EAF (Electric
Arc Furnace).
&#x1;A harmonic filter consists of capacitors (C) and a reactor (L), in some cases a resistor (R) is added.
&#x1;The harmonic filter is tuned to the frequency to delete. It will create a impedance minimum which will short or
damp the harmonic.
&#x1;A three-phase network will only consist of uneven harmonics 3, 5, 7 etc. They will be calculated from the base frequency 50 or 60Hz.
The SVC application consists of….
Valve Hall
&#x1;The thyristor is a semiconductive switch, on or off. It will start to conduct after a firing pulse is received and it will
switch off when the voltage comes to zero.
&#x1;Thyristors that are stacked in series formes a valve. The bus voltage is connected over the valve.
&#x1;Thyristors are connected in anti-parallel to take care of both the positive and negative phase of the current.


 

Cooling System & Auxiliary
&#x1;Thyristors will produce heat which must be transferred away or the thyristors will breake down.
&#x1;Consists of a main circuit which circulates the water and a second circuit for water treatment.
